Everyone needs a quick getaway, whether it’s a weekend retreat or a midweek escape, a change in scenery is vital. In April we decided to do a quick getaway to the big apple from Toronto, Canada. Here are our best tips on how we pulled off this affordable getaway.
Bryant park new york
To keep costs low we decided to take an overnight bus from Toronto to New York. We took the greyhound which left from downtown Toronto and dropped us off at Port Authority which is in downtown Manhattan. We arrived at 6:30 am and headed over to Time’s Square before all the hustle and bustle.
When heading over to the subway at Port authority we purchased a yellow MetroCard for 25 USD (32 CAD) which gave us approximately 10 subway trips. This was more than enough for us as Manhattan is easily accessible by foot.
In total we spent 137 CAD on transportation.
NEW YORK, NEW YORK
We love to spend our time at hostels, not only is it an affordable option for traveling, it also allows you to meet fellow traveller’s from around the world. We decided to stay at the American Dream Hostelwhich for a three person private room we paid 174 CAD per night, in this price we had breakfast and linens included. The hostel was conveniently located in the Flat Iron District in Manhattan that was walking distance to most major attractions. Taking the overnight bus saved us money by not spending on two extra nights of accommodations that way we had 4 days of touring in the price of two night. Most hostel have a storage space that allows you to store your luggage before and after check out that way you can continue to explore the city without the extra Baggage.
In total we spend 116 CAD per person on accommodations.

New York is filled with attractions for anyone depending on their interests. We decided to spend most of our time walking the streets, visiting the different boroughs throughout Manhattan. The first day we spent touring the island getting lost in its beauty. The only significant money we spent on tourism had been the admission to the Top of the Rock at the Rockefeller centre. When visiting The big apple, make a careful decision between the Empire State building and the Rockefeller centre both house a killer view of the city but also hold a steep admission price. We decided to go to the Top of the Rock as it had a better view of Central Park and the Empire State Building.
rockefeller tower, new york
A broads tip! Visit the basement of the Rockefeller centre at 9 am to get on the standby list for a late show (Jimmy Fallon or Seth Myers), its completely free! Find out more here!
Dumbo brooklyn, new york
For our last day in the City we decided to visit Brooklyn, for that we had to take the subway over the bridge to the next borough. Here we focused on exploring DUMBO where you have the iconic view of the Manhattan Bridge.
In total we spend 56$ on tourism
New York is considered one of the best food capitals of the World. The best culinary innovations are housed in this city, so make sure you take advantage of this. We ate breakfast at our hostel which offered fresh fruit and waffles. For lunch we decided to eat some famous New York cuisine such as New York style Pizza in Brooklyn and Shake Shack. These quick bites were satisfying and the cost was under $15. As for dinner we decided to venture out for international cuisine. Although we went to a sit down dinner, which tend to be a bit more expensive, the hostel gives you the option of using a communal kitchen to cook yourself a dinner.
In total we spend 78$ on food (this includes tips and taxes)
Shake Shack, New york
In total we spent roughly 387 CAD. Please remember to save extra money for shopping purposes as it’s hard to visit New York and not buy yourself a single item, whether its a souvenir or a shopping spree.
